Apple’s Liquid Glass UI

Apple recently rolled out its latest UI update across all of its products, and much like Marmite, it’s divided opinion. Some love the sleek, futuristic look, while others aren’t so convinced. If you’ve not seen it already - here’s the effect we’re talking about:

Apple’s Liquid Glass Launch Film

Many in the design world believe this update is Apple subtly preparing users for a much bigger shift, perhaps toward a future dominated by augmented reality. It’s a plausible theory, especially given the company’s direction.

Whatever the motivation, one thing is clear: Liquid Glass is here to stay. So, we decided to jump in and try to recreate the effect in After Effects.

Apple’s launch film for the new UI showcased some top-tier 3D work. In 3D software, effects like refraction are relatively straightforward as these tools are designed to handle transparency and simulate how light bends through glass. After Effects, on the other hand, isn’t quite built for that kind of realism. So in our tutorial video below, we walk through a few creative techniques to fake the look and still get that glossy, refractive feel.
